Nwaturu Chukwu

"Nwaturu Chukwu" is a reverent Igbo setting of the Agnus Dei, sung during the fraction rite of the Catholic Mass just before Holy Communion. Composed by Alex Ugwu, the piece carries the solemn and pleading tone appropriate for this moment in the liturgy, as the choir and congregation prepare to receive the Eucharist.

The lyrics faithfully follow the traditional Lamb of God text. The choir calls upon Christ, the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world ("Onye n'ekpochapu njo nke uwa"). In the first two invocations, the voices unite to ask for mercy ("mee r'anyi ebere"). For the third and final petition, the melody gently shifts to a prayer for peace ("nye nu anyi udo"), bringing the chant to a calm and hopeful close.

Ugwu's arrangement relies on earnest, repeating phrases that build a sense of deep supplication. The steady, rhythmic flow of the solfa notation guides the choir through a natural, speech-like cadence, allowing the profound meaning of the words to remain the central focus of the worship experience.
