Nwaturu Chukwu by Lyte C. Onyema — Lyrics
About Nwaturu Chukwu
"Nwatụrụ Chukwu" is a solemn Igbo setting of the Agnus Dei, sung during the breaking of the bread just before Communion. The text calls upon the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, asking first for mercy and finally for peace.
Lyte Onyema’s arrangement builds this petition naturally. It opens with a section where female and male voices take turns singing the initial plea for mercy ("me r'anyị ebere"). This simple, exposed opening mirrors the vulnerability of a congregation asking for forgiveness.
As the prayer shifts to the final invocation for peace ("nye anyị udo"), the score expands into full four-part harmony. The voices weave together, repeating the phrase to create a deep, settling sense of calm in the church before the faithful step forward to receive the Eucharist.
