About MIMO
When the Preface concludes and the congregation kneels for the Eucharistic Prayer, the choir leads the people into the Sanctus. "Mimo," composed by Messiah Alex Ugwu, brings this sacred moment to life in the Yoruba language. Set in a lively D minor, the piece captures both the profound reverence of the angels' song and the vibrant, rhythmic energy of Nigerian Catholic worship.
The arrangement opens with the solemn, repeated declaration of "Mímọ́ mímọ́ mímọ́" (Holy, holy, holy), building a sense of divine awe before breaking into the joyful, cascading acclamations of "Hosana l'oke ọrun" (Hosanna in the highest). In the second section, the choir shifts to the Benedictus—"Ibukun ni fun ẹni t'o n bọ wa" (Blessed is he who comes)—welcoming Christ's presence in the Eucharist. It is a setting that keeps the choir engaged with its forward momentum, ensuring the liturgy feels both deeply rooted in tradition and wonderfully alive.
