About MIMO
When the preface concludes and the congregation prepares for the heart of the Eucharistic Prayer, "Mimo" lifts the mood with a bright, rhythmic energy. Composed by Alex Hilary Ugwu, this Yoruba setting of the Sanctus is explicitly marked to be sung in a lively tempo, turning the traditional "Holy, Holy, Holy" into an active, joyful proclamation rather than a solemn chant.
The arrangement is built on a steady, driving solfa framework that gives the choir plenty of room to express the majesty of the text. The score is neatly divided into sections for the different parts of the prayer. After the opening declarations of God's holiness, the piece moves into the "Hosana l'oke ọrun" (Hosanna in the highest) passages, where the voices layer together to build a true sense of celebration.
For a choir director looking to introduce an indigenous Sanctus that keeps the congregation engaged, this piece works beautifully. It is a wonderful choice for a festive Sunday Mass, bringing a distinctly Nigerian choral vibrancy to the altar just before the consecration.
