About Hodie Christus natus est
Hans Leo Hassler's Hodie Christus natus est is a vibrant motet for double choir (SSATB and SATTB, SATBB). Written in Latin, it belongs to the sacred tradition of Magnificat antiphons and motets. The text, celebrating the Nativity of Christ, bursts with exultation. It announces the birth of the Saviour and the joyful response of angels and archangels singing on earth. The justified souls also rejoice, proclaiming glory to God in the highest. Hassler’s setting reflects this ecstatic message, with the interplay between the two choirs adding to the sense of divine celebration.
