About Hodie Christus natus est
On Christmas Day, this joyful Latin antiphon announces the birth of Christ. Vincenzo Ruffo’s setting for SATTB voices captures the exultation of the occasion. The music opens with angels singing in heaven and archangels rejoicing, before the text proclaims the joy of the righteous on earth, singing Gloria in excelsis Deo and Alleluia. The composer’s treatment of this text, a familiar part of the Christmas liturgy, is both celebratory and deeply devotional, reflecting the solemnity and gladness of the Nativity. This motet is an ideal choice for a choir looking to add a vibrant and spiritually uplifting anthem to their Christmas repertoire.
