About Assumpta est Maria
The text celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven, a scene of immense joy where angels praise and bless the Lord. The second part of the text further describes Mary, the Virgin, being taken to the heavenly chamber where the King of Kings is enthroned among the stars. Peter Philips sets this Marian antiphon with rich five-part harmony, creating a sonorous and devotional setting that would grace any sacred occasion. The voicing for AATTB and SSATB allows for a full and resonant sound, perfectly suited to the grandeur of the text. This motet is a fine example of Renaissance sacred polyphony.
