About Assumpta est Maria
Manoel Dias de Oliveira’s Assumpta est Maria is a substantial motet for SATB choir singing in Latin. The music opens with a sense of awe and wonder, the voices entering in dialogue and imitation, building towards moments of rich harmonic sonority. The text, a Marian antiphon, celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. The composer vividly depicts the joy of the angels and the praise they offer to God, before moving to the second part of the text which describes Mary being taken to her celestial dwelling. The motet offers a rich and devotional musical setting of this important liturgical text, suitable for services or concerts.
