About Assumpta est Maria

The Latin text of Assumpta est Maria paints a radiant scene of the Virgin Mary's assumption into heaven, surrounded by rejoicing angels praising God. The motet is set for SATTB voices, a rich sonority for this sacred occasion. The text continues with the imagery of Mary ascending to a heavenly chamber where Christ, the King of Kings, is enthroned. The second part speaks of running towards the fragrance of her ointments, and how virgins have loved her greatly. It concludes by calling her blessed by the Lord, for through her the fruit of life has been shared, leading to a final Amen. Philippe de Monte's setting captures the solemnity and joy of this Marian antiphon.
