About Ave Regina coelorum
Costanzo Porta's Ave Regina coelorum is a sacred motet for SATB choir, set to a Latin text. As a votive antiphon, it is part of a tradition of Marian devotion, often sung after Compline. The text hails the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, a glorious and beautiful figure, and asks her to intercede with Christ on behalf of the faithful. Porta's setting likely reflects the polyphonic style of the late Renaissance, offering rich harmonies and contrapuntal interplay suitable for liturgical use or concert performance.
