About Ave Regina coelorum
Alonso Lobo was one of the leading composers of the Spanish Golden Age. His motets represent a significant contribution to the sacred choral repertoire of the late Renaissance. This setting of the Marian antiphon Ave Regina coelorum is written for two choirs, SSATB and AATBB, creating rich sonic possibilities. The Latin text addresses Mary as Queen of Heaven and Lady of Angels, celebrating her as the 'root' and 'gate' from which light has sprung into the world. It continues with a joyful salutation to the glorious Virgin, surpassing all in beauty, and concludes with a plea for her to always intercede with Christ on our behalf. Lobo’s masterful handling of the combined forces allows for intricate polyphony and expressive contrasts, ideal for liturgical settings or concert performance.
