About Ave Regina coelorum
During the liturgical year, the Ave Regina caelorum is sung in place of the Angelus at Compline from the Saturday before Passion Sunday until Maundy Thursday. It is also sung at None during the season of Advent. This setting for SATB choir by Felice Anerio is a fine example of Renaissance polyphony. The Latin text is a Marian antiphon, a devotional text addressed to the Virgin Mary. Anerio's music beautifully conveys the text's message of praise and supplication, creating a serene and reverent atmosphere suitable for the sacred services for which it was written. Its clear textures and melodic lines make it an accessible yet deeply moving addition to a choir's repertoire.
