About Domine Jesu Christe

Pieter Maessens was a composer active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a period rich in sacred polyphony. His motet Domine Jesu Christe is written for SSATB voices and is sung in Latin. The text, taken from the Requiem Mass, includes a plea for mercy: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, look upon me and have mercy on me." It continues with a powerful affirmation of God's will: "For you said: I do not desire the death of a sinner, but rather that they should turn and live." Maessens' setting likely explores the dramatic contrast between supplication and divine reassurance, offering a profound musical reflection on repentance and salvation.
