About Diffusa est gratia
Giovanni Maria Nanino was a significant figure in the Roman School of polyphony during the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. His motet Diffusa est gratia, for SATB choir, sets a Latin text drawn from the scriptures. The words speak of grace being poured upon the lips of the singer, leading to eternal blessing. Nanino's setting is characteristic of the rich, imitative polyphony of its time, where the independent lines of the voices weave together to create a sonorous and devotional whole. This motet offers a refined example of sacred choral music from a pivotal era in Western art music.
