Ave Regina by Leonel Power — Lyrics
About Ave Regina
Composed by Leonel Power, this sacred motet is set in Latin for three voices: alto, tenor, and bass. It presents the traditional Marian antiphon Ave Regina coelorum, a prayer addressing Mary as Queen of Heaven and Lady of the Angels. The text continues with further salutations, calling her the 'holy root' and 'gate' from which light was born into the world, before concluding with a joyful address to the glorious Virgin, unsurpassed in beauty. The composer urges her to always pray to Christ on our behalf. Power was a significant figure in late medieval English music, and this motet showcases the contrapuntal skill and devotional spirit characteristic of the era.
