About Ave regina

Jacobus de Kerle's setting of Ave Regina coelorum is a sacred votive antiphon for SATTB choir. Composed in Latin, this work exemplifies sacred polyphony from the Renaissance period. The text, a Marian antiphon, addresses the Virgin Mary with a series of exclamations and salutations, praising her as Queen of Heaven and Lady of Angels, the root and gate from which the world's light sprang. It continues with a joyful acclamation of her glorious beauty, before imploring her to intercede for us with Christ. Kerle's setting, likely intended for liturgical use, offers a rich choral texture suitable for a cappella performance.
