About Ave maris stella
Edvard Grieg’s setting of the ancient Marian antiphon Ave maris stella offers a rich and varied choral experience. Composed for unison male voices (TTBB) and also arranged for mixed voice (SATB), women’s voices (SSA), and treble voices (SSSAA), this motet presents the familiar Latin text with a clear and noble musical unfolding. The music carefully shapes the plea for intercession, transforming the 'name of Eve' to that of Mary, and asking the 'Star of the sea' to offer light to the blind and dispel evils. The composer’s setting ensures that the prayer for purity, chastity, and a safe path towards beholding Jesus is delivered with both reverence and expressiveness.
