About Ave maris stella
Cristoforo Caresana’s setting of the popular Marian antiphon Ave maris stella opens with a gentle, imitative texture that gradually blossoms into fuller, homophonic passages. The SATB choir responds to the devotional Latin text with music that is both dignified and expressive, reflecting the plea for divine intercession. The composer adeptly shapes the musical lines to follow the contours of the prayer, which asks Mary, Star of the Sea, to grant us peace, lighten our burdens, and guide us towards eternal joy. Caresana’s skillful handling of the voices creates moments of both transparency and rich harmony, making this a compelling addition to the sacred choral repertoire.
