About Ave maris stella

This well-known Marian antiphon, Ave maris stella, is set here for SSATB choir. The Latin text addresses Mary as 'Star of the sea', 'nourishing Mother of God', and 'ever Virgin', the 'happy gate of heaven'. It calls upon her to change Eve's name to ours, to grant us peace, and to loose the chains of the guilty. The text prays that she will bring light to the blind, drive away our evils, and ask for all good things. It implores her to show herself a mother, so that through her, prayers may be accepted by the one who was born for us and became yours. The choir will be moved by the text's plea for purity and chastity, and its request for a safe journey towards eternal joy with Jesus. The hymn concludes with praise to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
