About Alma redemptoris mater
This SATTB setting of the Marian antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater would suit occasions in Advent and Christmas, or services honouring the Virgin Mary. Carlo Cozzi crafts a rich, devotional soundworld for the Latin text, which invokes Mary as the 'Mother of the Redeemer', 'gate of heaven', and 'star of the sea'. The music aims to 'succour the falling people' and asks for mercy for sinners, echoing the plea in the final line of the text. A worthy addition to the repertoire of sacred motets for advanced choirs.
