About Alma Redemptoris Mater
This setting of the Marian antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater opens with the plea of a people seeking help to rise from falling. The text invokes Mary as the 'Mother of the Redeemer', the 'gate of heaven', and the 'star of the sea', through whom all humanity was redeemed. It recalls the miracle of her virgin motherhood and the Annunciation, when Gabriel's greeting was heard. The composer John Hetland sets this ancient Latin text for SATB choir, offering a prayer for mercy for sinners.
