About Alma redemptoris mater
Johannes de Cleve's Alma redemptoris mater unfolds with a rich SSATTB texture, showcasing intricate interplay between the voices. This sacred antiphon, set in Latin, draws on a Marian text invoking the Virgin Mary as the 'Mother of the Redeemer', the 'heavenly portal', and the 'star of the sea'. The music responds to the plea for succour, reflecting the text's hope for a fallen people and its remembrance of the Annunciation through Gabriel's 'Ave'. De Cleve's setting embraces the text's devotion, offering a profound musical meditation on Mary's role in salvation history.
