About Alma redemptoris mater
Isfrid Kayser’s setting of the Marian antiphon Alma redemptoris mater offers a rich opportunity for SATB choir. This Latin text, a prayer to Mary, Mother of the Redeemer, traditionally sung before and after Compline, describes her role as the gateway to heaven and Star of the Sea. The lyrics implore her to aid her people who strive to rise from falling. It also recalls her miraculous conception of Christ, while she remained a virgin, and her acceptance of Gabriel’s greeting, ‘Ave’.
