About Alma Redemptoris Mater
Wytze Oostenbrug's Alma Redemptoris Mater is a sacred motet for SATB choir. The text is a well-known Marian antiphon, a prayer to the Mother of the Redeemer. It addresses Mary as the gate of heaven and star of the sea, asking for help for a people who strive to rise from falling. The text marvels that she bore her holy Creator, and that she remained a virgin before and after. It recalls the angelic greeting from Gabriel's lips, the Ave, and concludes with a plea for mercy for sinners. Oostenbrug's setting for unaccompanied voices captures the devotional spirit of the Latin text.
