Alma Redemptoris Mater

Giuseppe Antonio Bernabei’s motet Alma Redemptoris Mater sets a profound Latin text, a Marian antiphon that addresses the Mother of the Redeemer. The composer’s SATB setting evokes the text’s plea for succour, describing Mary as the heavenly gate and star of the sea, who bore nature’s astonished Creator. It implores her to aid a people striving to rise from falling, and to have mercy on sinners, recalling the annunciation from Gabriel’s greeting: Ave.

This sacred setting is a powerful example of motet composition, its rich four-part harmony underscoring the devotional nature of the Latin words. Bernabei’s music is crafted to convey the solemnity and hopeful entreaty of this ancient text, making it a moving addition to any liturgical or concert programme.
