About Alma Redemptoris mater
This setting of the familiar Marian votive antiphon Alma Redemptoris mater is by Felice Anerio. The text, a prayer to the Mother of the Redeemer, describes her as the gateway to heaven and star of the sea, imploring her aid for a people struggling to rise from falling. It also recalls the Annunciation, when she received Gabriel’s greeting and gave birth to God’s son, while nature stood in awe. Anerio’s SSA voicing of this devotional text, sung in Latin, is both sensitive and direct. It is a beautiful example of sacred motet writing from the late Renaissance period, suitable for services and concerts.
