About Aja Di Aso

"AJA DI ASO" is a reverent Igbo Catholic hymn traditionally sung during the Offertory, as the gifts of bread and wine—along with the prayers of the people—are brought to the altar. The title speaks of a holy and sacred sacrifice, setting a tone of deep humility and devotion. The song captures the essence of the Eucharistic offering, describing a pure sacrifice lifted up from the mouths of God’s children.

The verses unfold in a beautiful call-and-response pattern that feels right at home in a Nigerian parish. A cantor leads the congregation in offering their very selves to the Lord ("b'onwe anyị") and petitioning for His grace, asking for the forgiveness of sins and for mercy upon the land ("ebere n'obodo anyị"). To each invocation, the choir and congregation answer with a unified response—proclaiming the offering as the highest ("kachaelu") and pleading with God to accept it ("nara ya").

This structure not only makes it an engaging piece for a choir to sing, but also draws the entire congregation into the act of offering. It is a song that grounds the Mass in a spirit of communal prayer, reminding everyone present that the sacrifice on the altar is offered for the healing and blessing of the whole community.
