AJA DI ASO by Fred V. C. Uche — Lyrics
About AJA DI ASO
"Aja Di Aso" is a deeply reverent Igbo offertory hymn that has echoed in Nigerian Catholic parishes for decades. Composed by Fred V.C. Uche in 1975, the song captures the true essence of the Offertory: we are not just bringing bread and wine to the altar, but offering our very selves. The refrain beautifully declares that the holy sacrifice we present to God is our own bodies and souls ("Ahụ na mkpụr'obi anyị").
The verses are structured as a litany, allowing a cantor to lead while the congregation and choir answer with a unified plea: "Chukwu biko nara aja, nara ụmụ Gị gọzie" (God, please accept this sacrifice and bless your children). As the cantor moves through prayers of thanksgiving, praise, and a plea for forgiveness, the repetitive response builds a profound sense of communal worship. It is a perfect piece for the presentation of gifts, drawing the whole church into a spirit of humble surrender before the Eucharistic sacrifice begins.
