About YA UBANGIJI

"Ya Ubangiji" is a gentle, reverent Hausa setting of the Kyrie eleison, composed by Jude Nnam. Sung during the Penitential Rite, it leads the congregation in asking for God's mercy at the very beginning of the Mass. The familiar call-and-response structure allows a section of the choir to introduce the plea before the rest of the voices join in a unified petition.

The piece moves with a steady, solemn grace fitting for its purpose. The alternating cries of "Ya Ubangiji" (Lord) and "Ya Kristi" (Christ), followed by the response "ka yi mana jinkai" (have mercy on us), create a deeply prayerful atmosphere in the church. It shows how indigenous languages bring a profound, personal resonance to the universal prayers of the liturgy.

When the choir begins the opening notes, there is an immediate shift in the pews as the congregation settles into a posture of reflection. The voices build naturally from the initial calls to the full four-part harmony, carrying the prayers of the people upward. It is a setting that requires no heavy accompaniment, relying instead on the sincere, blended voices of the singers to prepare everyone for the rest of the Mass.
