Ya Ubangiji

"Ya Ubangiji" is a deeply reverent setting of the Kyrie eleison in Hausa, composed by Jude Nnam. In the Catholic Mass, the Penitential Rite is that quiet, grounding moment where the congregation pauses to acknowledge their need for God's mercy before entering fully into the liturgy. This piece captures that spirit of humble petition, offering a gentle and reflective start to the celebration.

The arrangement is built on a pleading melody that repeats the central cry, "Ka yi mana jinkai" (have mercy on us). As the choir moves from the opening invocation of "Ya Ubangiji" (Lord) to the second section's "Ya Kristi" (Christ), the vocal parts echo and support one another, creating the sound of a whole community lifting its voice in prayer.
