Ya Ubangiji

"Ya Ubangiji" is a Hausa setting of the Kyrie eleison, composed by the renowned Nigerian liturgical musician Jude Nnam. The words carry the traditional plea for mercy, with the repeated phrase "ka yi mana jin kai" evoking a deep sense of petition and humility before God.

This piece is sung during the Penitential Rite at the beginning of the Mass. It carries a solemn yet rhythmic feel, typical of Nnam's ability to blend indigenous Nigerian musical idioms with the formal structure of the Catholic liturgy. The harmonies are layered and straightforward, building a strong sense of communal prayer.
