Ubi Caritas by Jacques Berthier — Lyrics
About Ubi Caritas
This setting of "Ubi Caritas" from the Taizé community is a familiar and deeply loved piece in many Catholic parishes. The simple Latin refrain—declaring that where charity and love are found, God is present—creates a quiet space for the congregation to pray. As the choir repeats the ostinato melody, the gentle harmony builds a sense of shared peace that settles over the church.
The English verses draw our attention to the gathering of the faithful and the "one bread of Christ," making this a natural and moving choice for Communion. It is also a traditional antiphon for Holy Thursday, reminding us of Christ’s mandate to love one another. Singing this during the washing of the feet, or as the congregation approaches the altar to receive the Eucharist, brings a profound sense of unity to the Mass.
