About Ubi Caritas
When we prepare for the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, "Ubi Caritas" is one of those pieces that immediately comes to mind. This simple, chant-like ostinato draws its text from an ancient hymn celebrating brotherly love and Christ's presence among us. The repetitive nature of the melody allows the congregation to sink deep into prayer, singing "Live in charity and steadfast love" while a cantor layers the English verses over the top.
In the choir loft, this piece is a wonderful exercise in listening and blending. Because the main refrain is sung continuously, the voices must remain gentle and sustained, creating a peaceful foundation. The cantor verses—reminding us that "the love of God in Jesus Christ bears eternal joy"—float above the harmony. It works beautifully during the Offertory or Communion, especially on days when the liturgy calls for a spirit of unity and quiet reflection.
