About THE HOLY CITY

"The Holy City" is a beloved sacred song that takes the listener through a vivid, three-part vision of Jerusalem. It moves from the joyful singing of children in the ancient temple, to the dark and chilling shadow of the cross on Calvary, and finally to the glorious revelation of the New Jerusalem where the gates are open wide to all.

For Nigerian choirs, this piece is a familiar standard, often sung as a powerful solo with the full choir joining in the majestic "Jerusalem! Jerusalem!" choruses. It is particularly striking during Easter, Christ the King, or major feast days, as it captures the complete journey of Christ's passion and triumphant reign.

The shifting moods—from peaceful slumber to sorrowful mystery, and ultimately to triumphant eternal light—make it deeply moving. When the final chorus rings out with "Sing for the night is o'er," it brings a profound sense of hope and heavenly promise to the congregation.
