The Holy City

"The Holy City" is a classic choral anthem that tells a sweeping, three-part story. It opens with a peaceful vision of ancient Jerusalem, where children sing joyful Hosannas. The mood then shifts dramatically in the second verse, as the music darkens to reflect the shadow of the cross on a lonely hill. Finally, the song bursts into triumph with a vision of the New Jerusalem, a city bathed in the light of God where the gates are open wide.

For a choir, this piece is a wonderful exercise in storytelling and dynamic contrast. The verses are often taken by a soloist who carries the narrative forward, while the full choir joins in the majestic "Jerusalem! Jerusalem!" refrains.
