The Holy City by Stephen Adams — Lyrics
About The Holy City
"The Holy City" is one of those grand, sweeping pieces that takes both the choir and the congregation on a profound journey. It opens quietly, almost like a lullaby, as a soloist recounts a dream of old Jerusalem filled with the singing of children. But the mood shifts dramatically in the second verse. The glad hosannas fade, the sun grows dark, and the shadow of the cross rises on a lonely hill. It is always a striking moment in rehearsal when the choir must pull back and capture that sudden, chilling mystery of the Passion.
Then comes the glorious turn. The final section bursts open with a vision of the New Jerusalem, where the gates are wide open and no one is denied. This arrangement builds layer by layer—moving from unison to a solo, then a duet, and finally a full, triumphant chorus. When the voices unite for that last, soaring "Jerusalem, Jerusalem," it feels like the heavens themselves are opening. We often bring this piece out for Easter, Christ the King, or special choral concerts, because its narrative of ultimate redemption and eternal light never fails to move those listening in the pews.
