RIDE ON IN MAJESTY by William Henry Havergal — Lyrics
About RIDE ON IN MAJESTY
"Ride on! ride on in majesty!" is one of the most recognizable and stirring hymns we sing as Holy Week begins. The words capture the bittersweet triumph of Palm Sunday. As the choir and congregation process with palms, singing "Hark! all the tribes Hosanna cry," there is a clear sense of celebration. Yet, the hymn does not let us forget where this procession is heading. The repeated phrase "In lowly pomp ride on to die" shifts our focus from the cheering crowds in Jerusalem to the approaching sacrifice on Calvary.
Musically, the sturdy, marching rhythm of the tune gives the piece a steady, resolute feeling. It feels exactly like a procession. When the voices rise on the final verse—"Then take, O God, thy power, and reign"—it becomes a powerful declaration of faith. We are not just remembering a historical event; we are walking with Christ through the passion, knowing that the cross ultimately leads to victory over captive death and conquered sin.
This collection of sheets shows how deeply embedded the hymn is in our choir lofts, featuring both handwritten solfa arrangements and the classic four-part hymnal setting. It is a staple for Palm Sunday Mass, perfect for the entrance procession or the blessing of the palms, setting the solemn but hopeful tone for the rest of Holy Week.
