RIDE ON IN MAJESTY — Lyrics
About RIDE ON IN MAJESTY
"Ride On In Majesty" is a quintessential Palm Sunday hymn that captures the profound paradox of Holy Week. We start by singing of Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, surrounded by crowds waving palms and shouting Hosanna. But the mood of the text quickly shifts our focus toward what lies ahead. The "lowly pomp" of riding a donkey points directly to the cross, reminding the congregation that this parade of glory is actually a march toward sacrifice.
When we sing this piece from the choir loft, the contrast between the majestic melody and the solemn words really shapes how we deliver it. The chorus builds with a powerful, repeating "Ride on, ride on in majesty!" before settling into the sobering final phrase, "in lowly pomp ride on to die." It is a brilliant way to lead the church from the joyful procession at the start of Mass into the heavier, reflective atmosphere of the Passion reading.
The later verses deepen this reflection, asking us to imagine the "angel armies of the sky" looking down with sad and wondering eyes. It is a piece that requires both strong, confident singing for the Hosannas and a deeply reverent tone for the reality of Christ's mortal pain.
