OTITO DIRI CHINEKE (Gloria in Igbo) by IFEANYI NWAHWU — Lyrics
About OTITO DIRI CHINEKE (Gloria in Igbo)
"Otito Diri Chineke" is a joyful Igbo setting of the Gloria, composed by Ifeanyi Nwahwu. Originally written as an entry for the choir at St. Joseph Catholic Chaplaincy, Imo State University (IMSU) in Owerri, this piece captures the exultant praise that belongs to the introductory rites of a festive Mass. When the choir launches into the opening refrain, it immediately invites the congregation to join in the angels' song of glory to God in the highest and peace to His people on earth.
The verses faithfully follow the traditional liturgical text of the Gloria, translated into Igbo. From the adoration of the Father in the first verse ("Anyị ajaa gị mma") to the solemn petitions addressed to the Lamb of God in the third, the melody shifts naturally to reflect the meaning of the words. The arrangement builds toward a triumphant final verse acknowledging Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, before resolving into a bright, rhythmic "Amen" in the coda. It is a wonderful choice for Sundays and solemnities, lifting the hearts of the faithful in pure worship.
