OLISA by JUDE NNAM — Lyrics
About OLISA
"Olisa" by Jude Nnam is a vibrant, extended song of praise and thanksgiving in Igbo. The title refers to God, the Almighty, and the music opens with a sweeping, energetic call to rise and thank Him ("Kunie k'anyi kelee Ya"). It paints a vivid picture of God as the ultimate defender—the one who goes to battle empty-handed and still wins ("Ọgba aka eje ogu").
The verses draw on rich Igbo proverbs to describe God's flawless providence. The first verse marvels at how the udara fruit falls to the ground without gathering sand, and how a fish never drowns in water, illustrating God's perfect care for His creation. The second verse reminds us that the God who created the lion cub will never let it eat grass, a beautiful metaphor for divine provision and protection.
With its joyful Allegro Cantabile tempo, choirs often sing this during the Entrance or Recessional procession, or as a grand thanksgiving piece. It is a song that naturally lifts the congregation onto their feet, inviting everyone to join in the massive, rolling chorus of "Ekele diri Gi" (Thanks be to You).
