Olisa by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About Olisa
"Olisa" is a vibrant Igbo thanksgiving hymn by Jude Nnam that calls the whole church to lift their hands in gratitude. The piece opens with a resonant bass solo inviting the congregation to praise God for His mighty works, before the full choir bursts into a joyful, rhythmic refrain. It is a song of deep acknowledgment—recognising that God fights our battles, watches over our lives, and does wonderful things that fill our eyes with awe.
What makes this piece so special for a choir to sing is its rich use of Igbo imagery in the verses. The lyrics draw on beautiful proverbs to describe God's flawless care: the falling udara fruit that never touches the sand, the fish that lives in the river without paying for water, and the child walking with an elder who will never lack. These lines paint a picture of a Father who provides perfectly and forgives our sins, even when we feel unworthy.
With its lively tempo and layered harmonies, "Olisa" is a perfect fit for the Offertory procession or a dedicated thanksgiving moment at Mass. As the voices build and declare "Aka m di n'elu!" (My hands are lifted high!), it naturally moves the congregation to join in, bringing their own gifts and gratitude to the altar.
