OGAZI AMAKA... by OKPOGBA ALVIN CHINEDU — Lyrics
About OGAZI AMAKA...
"Ogazi Amaka..." is a profound Igbo choral piece that draws its message from a well-known traditional proverb. The song centers on the ogazi (the guinea fowl), a bird celebrated for its striking, speckled plumage and undeniable physical beauty. Yet, as the lyrics point out, despite all its elegance, the guinea fowl is never chosen for sacred sacrifices—that role falls to the ordinary chicken.
Composer Okpogba Alvin Chinedu uses this powerful imagery to deliver a moral lesson to the listener. The choir sings a warning: "A di kwala k'Ogazi nke mara mma... ma n'onwegh'ihe jiy'eme!" (Do not be like the guinea fowl that is beautiful, but has no usefulness). It is a call to value substance, character, and purpose over mere outward appearance. The music asks us to reflect on what truly matters, reminding us that physical beauty without inner worth or practical value is empty.
Musically, the piece is a joy to sing, full of rhythmic vitality and storytelling flair. It unfolds almost like a folk tale told in the village square, making it a fantastic choice for cultural days, choir concerts, and special non-liturgical performances. When a choir brings out the dynamic contrasts and the conversational tone of the verses, it never fails to captivate the audience and leave them thinking long after the final note.
