Nohuaren by Vincent Ihaza — Lyrics
About Nohuaren
"Nohuaren" is a reverent Edo setting of the Sanctus, composed by Ihaza Vincent I. In the Catholic Mass, this piece is sung during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, right as the congregation joins the choirs of angels in proclaiming the holiness of God. The title echoes the angelic cry of "Holy," and the music carries the profound awe that belongs to this moment at the altar.
The composition uses a steady, majestic solfa arrangement to deliver the familiar words of the acclamation, praising the Lord of hosts ("Osanudazi no yean etin hia") whose glory fills heaven and earth. When the choir reaches the Hosanna—"Urhomwen o ghue, Vbehe no yio see"—the melody lifts, inviting the whole church into a joyful declaration of praise. It shows how indigenous Nigerian languages bring their own natural cadence and deep reverence to the universal prayers of the Mass.
