About In principio erat Verbum
Singers preparing for Advent or Christmas will find Balthasar Resinarius’s motet In principio erat Verbum an excellent choice. The composer sets the opening verses of St John’s Gospel in Latin, a text proclaiming Christ as the divine Word and light of the world, which came into the world and was not recognised. The motet is for SATB choir, and the musical setting is rich and expressive, moving between the solemnity of the Latin text and the directness of a German chorale melody that reinforces the Gospel message. This is a fine example of Renaissance sacred polyphony, suitable for a choir seeking a motet with both gravitas and melodic appeal.
