Immanuel

"Immanuel" is a striking Igbo choral anthem that approaches the Christmas story with a profound sense of purpose. Rather than just a lighthearted carol, the music carries the weight of the Messiah’s ultimate mission. The opening lines announce the birth of a male child in Bethlehem, calling the choir and congregation to rejoice, but the melody soon shifts to reflect on why He came—to die and rise on the third day ("O g'anwu, m'o g'ete ta na mbosi nk'ato") so that we might have eternal life.

For a choir, this piece offers a dramatic journey through the Nativity. The sopranos lead the narrative, bringing gifts of gold ("ola edo") and sweet-smelling incense ("ude isi oma") to the newborn king. The arrangement builds toward an urgent, joyful call to hurry to Bethlehem ("Gbalu, gbalu bia wa Bethlehem"), culminating in a triumphant, layered chorus of "Hosanna."
