Hosanna to the prince of light,
That cloth'd himself in clay;
Enter'd the iron gates of death,
And tore the bars away.
Death is no more the king of dread,
Since our Immanuel rose;
He took the tyrant's sting away,
And spoil'd our hellish foes.
See how the conqu'ror mounts aloft,
And to his Father flies,

About Immanuel
This setting of Isaac Watts' hymn text, Hosanna to the Prince of Light, is for SATB choir. The words celebrate the resurrection of Christ, proclaiming that death and hell have been overthrown. The text paints a vivid picture of Christ's ascension, his triumphant reign at the Father's side, and the blessings he scatters. It calls for both human voices and angelic choirs to praise our incarnate God. This anthem is well-suited for Eastertide, or any occasion focused on Christ's victory over death.
