About ìbà

"Ìbà" is a majestic Yoruba motet of adoration, originally composed for the 2019 FILM Festival and presented by St. Cecilia's Choir at the University of Lagos. Written for an SATB choir with divisi and a full complement of traditional Yoruba percussion—including the gbedu, gangan (talking drum), shekere, and agogo—the piece is a grand, rhythmic offering of praise. The title translates to "homage" or "reverence," setting the tone for a song that bows before the Almighty.

The lyrics paint a vivid picture of God's supreme power over creation, acknowledging Him as the Lord of heaven and the King of kings ("Ẹyin l'ọba àwọn ọba"). The choir sings of the mysteries of darkness and light, wind and fire, marveling at the Creator's works. As the piece builds, a soaring tenor solo takes the lead, pouring out titles of divine majesty—"Ọba títí! Ọba tòtó!" (Eternal King! Absolute King!)—before the full choir returns for a final, resounding declaration of homage.

Though conceived as a festival motet, its deep reverence makes it a powerful choice for Communion or moments of profound adoration. The driving percussion and rich vocal harmonies create an atmosphere that is both culturally grounded and deeply sacred, lifting the congregation's hearts in awe of the Eternal King.
