About Hodie nobis coelorum rex
This grand motet by Philippe de Monte is ideal for Christmas services. It celebrates the Incarnation, with the text proclaiming the birth of the King of Heaven from a Virgin, who has deigned to be born to recall lost humanity to the heavenly kingdom. The music for the six-part choir SSATTB,AATTBB is jubilant, reflecting the joy of the angelic host at the appearance of eternal salvation for humankind. The motet builds to a powerful climax, echoing the Gloria in excelsis Deo and the earthly peace proclaimed at Christ's birth.
