Deutsche Messe by Franz Schubert — Lyrics
About Deutsche Messe
Schubert's Deutsche Messe was composed for congregational singing in German, as a response to Emperor Joseph II's reforms promoting vernacular liturgy. The SATB setting offers a profound musical reflection on the texts, which explore the composer's personal faith and relationship with God. The first movement, 'Zum Eingang', contemplates the human condition, seeking solace in the divine through joy and sorrow, and finding ultimate security and a sense of home in God's embrace. It acknowledges human frailty but embraces childlike trust in God's mercy, a theme that permeates the entire Mass. This work is deeply devotional, intended to draw the listener into a more intimate spiritual experience.
