DAUKAKA! by ABEL OBAJE — Lyrics
About DAUKAKA!
"Daukaka!" is a spirited Hausa setting of the Gloria, composed by Abel Obaje. Originally written as an entry for the 2011 Abuja Arch-Diocesan Choir Competition by St. Patrick's Parish, Karshi, the piece brings a vibrant, rhythmic energy to the Mass. It allows choirs to lift up the ancient angelic hymn of praise in a deeply indigenous voice.
The song opens with a bright, declarative chorus that immediately invites the congregation into worship. As it moves through the four verses, the arrangement carefully follows the traditional liturgical text—from praising the Father to pleading for the mercy of the "Dan tunkiya" (Lamb of God), before culminating in a resounding triple Amen. It is a wonderful choice for festive Masses, bringing a celebratory and distinctly Northern Nigerian feel to the liturgy.
